Disposition Authorities for Individual Classification for Headquarters Case Files. Part B: Classification 127. Sensitivie Positions in the U.S. Government.

As part of Public Law 266, the 81st Congress, in August 1949, authorized investigations of the loyalty of people accepting employement or fellowships for work in sensitive areas. The Bureau opeaned the first case in Headquarters under this law on April 12, 1950, and the separate classification for these cases was formerly documented by a memorandum on October 9, 1950. All cases were opened between April and June 1950; after June 30 the Bureau only checked applicant fingerprints rather than conducting an investigation. The classification is now obsolete.

The FBI established this classification when it assumed responsibility for ascertaining the protection capabilities and weaknesses of defense plants. Each plant survey was a separate case file, with the survey, supplemental surveys, and all communications dealing with a plant insofar as plant protection was concerned, filed together.
